Level of proficiency

The TEF Canada exam assesses French language proficiency of candidates based on a 7-level scale, which is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).

What is tested?

The TEF Canada exam evaluates your French language skills in both writing and speaking through the following sections:

  1. Oral Comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions
  2. Written Comprehension: 60 minutes – 50 questions
  3. Oral Expression: 15 minutes – 2 topics
  4. Written Expression: 60 minutes – 2 topics

After taking the TEF Canada exam, you will receive a certificate that displays your scores for each section. To determine the corresponding Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) for your score, you can refer to the Table of Correspondence with CLB.

The TEF Canada exam is composed of four modules which evaluate the candidate’s proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing. The breakdown of each module is as follows:

Reading: 60 minutes – 50 questions – 300 points

Listening: 40 minutes – 60 questions – 360 points

Writing: 60 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points

Speaking: 15 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points
